Minarets in Switzerland

This article on the Wall Street Journal website, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125738800597529989.html, discusses a possible referendum in Switzerland proposed by their right wing party to ban the construction of minarets on mosques. The article also mentions that out of the 150 mosques in Switzerland, only 4 have minarets. Many businesses are worried because around 7% of Switzerland’s total exports go to Muslim countries. And some fear that this referendum can make Switzerland “a target for Islamic terrorism.”
I find it very strange that this little piece of architecture is being targeted, because it does not look offensive. It’s not even a part of Islam belief; it’s just something calls people to come and pray at the mosque. It’s like the right party is going out of their way just to make their 5% Muslim population not welcome. The article does not mention anything specific reason why the minarets are being targetted like if the speakers are too loud or if people are leaving work to pray when they hear a prayer call. It is definitely not good for Switerland’s politics, because other countries have always looked at them as nuetral. It seems as if nothing good can come from this referendum passing; their exports will go down, there will be more tension between the religion groups, and they might become a target for an attack.
